Commissariat à l’Energie Atomique et aux Energies Alternatives

Overall presentation

The CEA (French Atomic Energy Commission) is an internationally recognized technological research organization in the domains of energy, information and health technologies and defence. LITEN (Laboratory of Innovation for New Energy Technologies and Nanomaterials) aims at developing new energy technologies, including PV and nanomaterials. LITEN is a major partner for industry with 350 research contracts signed this year. Numerous patents (portfolio of 840 including 200 in 2012) result from the LITEN technological research. LITEN has 700 R&D personnel (15,000 for CEA) for a turnover of 150 M€. CEA/LITEN is a specialist of thin films (photo active layer, TCO) and nano materials.

Activities

  • Project coordination
  • Implementation on textured substrate on CIGS solar cells. Development of ultra-thin CIGS absorber layers (WP5).
  • Optical characterization of the scattering (WP6).
  • Module performance and accelerated lifetime testing. Economical potential evaluation of glass embossing in large area (WP7)

Further information

The thin film solar cells group at CEA LITEN has a strong experience in crystalline (CIGS, CZTS) as well as amorphous (a-Si) thin films solar cells. Its main expertise deals with developing thin films solar cells on original substrates (metallic or ultra-thin glass flexible substrates, semi-transparent substrates, non-conventional substrates …). The texturation of substrates (Mo, glass) and transparent conducting oxides for light trapping enhancement has been subject of an intensive research activity too.
